MEMBERS OF THE STANDING COMMISSION

The 28th International Conference in December 2003 elected five members from National Societies (NS) to the present Commission, the mandate of which extends to the 30th International Conference in 2007.  In addition, there are four ex-officio members representing the ICRC and the International Federation as stipulated in the Statutes for the Movement, Article 17.

H. E. Dr Mohammed Al-Hadid was unanimously elected Chairman of the Standing Commission at its first meeting on December 5, 2003. Ms Davidson was elected Vice Chair.

Pr Freddy Karup Pedersen

Dr Pedersen was special envoy of the Danish Red Cross (DRC) and its President 1997-2005.


He chaired the Health Commission of the International Federation 2001-2005 and was member of the recent “Federation of the Future” -panel.

In Copenhagen, Dr Pedersen is Head of the University Clinic of Pediatrics II at ‘Rigshospitalet’ and professor in pediatrics.

He was elected member of the Standing Commission in 2003 and has chaired its Working Group on updating the Strategy for the International Red cross and Red Crescent Movement 2003-2005.

As member of the Commission, Dr Pedersen finds it important that the Movement acts as one, speaks with one voice and ensures that all its components are strong for it to be one of the decisive global forces in the humanitarian field .He would like to see an increased understanding and respect for the Movement’s special role and mandate globally and nationally and strengthened solidarity among all its components.
